Allotment of 1 crore homes to women under PMAY marks a significant milestone: NAREDCO Mahi

The allotment of 1 crore homes to women under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) marks a significant step towards women’s empowerment and inclusive housing. It reflects the Government’s commitment to strengthening Nari Shakti and supporting women’s economic empowerment.

NAREDCO Mahi, which works to promote greater participation and representation of women in the real estate sector, has welcomed the milestone. Under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0, more than 1.25 crore houses have been sanctioned, with 1 crore homes allotted in the name of women or through joint ownership.

Further strengthening this focus, the 8th Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting under PMAY-U 2.0, held in August 2026, approved more than 2.09 lakh houses, of which around 2.03 lakh have been allotted to women.

NAREDCO Mahi said that women’s role in real estate is no longer limited to home ownership. Women are increasingly playing a role in property purchase decisions, real estate investment, entrepreneurship, professional careers and leadership. This growing participation is helping make the real estate sector more inclusive, diverse and stronger.

Dr. Ananta Singh Raghuvanshi, Chairperson, NAREDCO Mahi, said, “The allotment of one crore homes to women under PMAY is an important step towards strengthening Nari Shakti. Owning a home, either in a woman’s name or through joint ownership, is not just about having a place to live. It also gives her a valuable financial asset that can strengthen her economic security, dignity and participation in important family decisions. At the same time, women are increasingly taking up leadership, entrepreneurial and professional roles across the real estate sector. This growing participation reflects a positive change in the industry.”

Smita Patil, President, NAREDCO Mahi, said, “Women are becoming an increasingly important part of India’s real estate journey. They are not only homeowners and investors, but are also making their mark as professionals, entrepreneurs and leaders. The PMAY milestone is particularly significant because home ownership can give women a stronger financial foundation and greater confidence in making long-term decisions. Going forward, creating more opportunities for women across the real estate value chain will be important for building a more inclusive and progressive industry.”

NAREDCO Mahi believes that as India’s real estate sector enters its next phase of growth, women should be recognised not only as beneficiaries and homebuyers, but also as investors, professionals, entrepreneurs, decision-makers and industry leaders. Greater participation of women across the real estate value chain will not only make the sector more inclusive, but also contribute meaningfully to India’s broader economic and social development.
