Delhi residents may soon be able to fast-track their property registrations, with the city government examining a proposal to introduce a tatkal-style system offering same-day or next-day appointments at sub-registrar offices for a premium fee.
This follows persistent complaints over waiting periods for appointments — especially at high-demand offices in Janakpuri, Pitampura and Mehrauli — often stretching into several days or weeks due to heavy surge in registrations, according to a Times of India report.
The revenue department has submitted the proposal to introduce a registration window on the lines of Indian Railways’ tatkal booking system, govt officials said. If okayed, this will be Delhi’s first express registration service, aimed at reducing delays and boosting govt revenue.
It will also cater to urgent registration of deeds, wills, agreements and other legally binding documents.
The fee is yet to be finalised. The officials indicated that the amount is likely to be “in the thousands” to maintain exclusivity and prevent the fast-track window from being overbooked. “A high fee will ensure only those who require urgent registration opt for the service,” they said.
Advocate Kishan Chauhan, who handles property-related matters in west Delhi, said the waiting time at busy sub-registrar offices has become a major issue.
“In Janakpuri and Pitampura, this window is usually at least 15 days. When the rush is heavier, it crosses 20 days,” he said.
