Eden Realty unveils Kolkata Westshore, eyes 700-acre waterfront transformation at Shalimar

Eden Realty has announced its flagship mixed-use district, Kolkata Westshore, in a milestone development destined to reshape Eastern India’s urban landscape. Spanning 38 acres on the Shalimar foreshore in Howrah, the project acts as the primary anchor for a massive, multi-stakeholder vision encompassing nearly 700 acres of adjoining green, institutional, port, and railway riverfront lands.

While Kolkata Westshore’s 38-acre footprint establishes an integrated destination for luxury housing, retail, high-end hospitality, and public waterfront promenades, the broader contiguous canvas represents one of the largest integrated urban transformation opportunities within a metropolitan core in India. This massive 700-acre riverfront stretch brings together major institutional entities, including the Botanical Garden (270 acres), IIEST Shibpur (150 acres), Kolkata Port Trust (125+ acres), and Indian Railways (200+ acres).

Historically defined by 19th-century railway yards, dry docks, and heavy industrial mills, the Shalimar foreshore is rapidly shifting into a natural extension of Kolkata’s Central Business District (CBD). For centuries, the Hooghly has been central to Kolkata’s identity and economic life. Yet, much of the city’s growth has historically remained concentrated on its eastern bank. Kolkata so far has steadily expanded in every direction-from Salt Lake and New Town in the east to Joka and Tollygunge in the south, and Dunlop and Madhyamgram in the north. As the city continues to grow, the western shore of the Hooghly represents the next natural frontier in its urban evolution. The transformation relies on multi-modal infrastructure enhancements, including the operational under-river East-West Metro (Green Line), expanded river-ferry channels, and the proposed Water Metro network with its primary terminal at Shalimar Ghat. Furthermore, the upcoming 7.2 km elevated Kona Expressway corridor connecting directly to the Second Hooghly Bridge (Vidyasagar Setu) and Belgharia Expressway will reduce transit times across the region to under 30 minutes.

To maximize this structural momentum, Kolkata Westshore meticulously structures its 38 acres into four distinct development zones. The residential anchors include Eden Devprayag, a 9-acre luxury development with towers up to 28 floors with 270-degree river views and exclusive access to Banaras style ghat, alongside Solaris Shalimar, a 9-acre sustainable, community-focused phase. The future expansion plan includes more luxury residences, a 14 acre dedicated to retail walkways, education and hospitality services and lifestyle amenities, while a 6-acre hospitality zone will feature a 100-key five-star hotel.

Reaffirming the group’s long-term vision, Sachchidanand Rai, Chairman, Eden Realty Group, added, ““Over the years, Kolkata has expanded steadily in every direction, responding to the changing needs of a growing city. We believe the western shore is the next natural frontier in this evolution. Shalimar and its surrounding areas have all the ingredients for this transition-from exceptional connectivity and established institutional and green anchors to a significant wave of infrastructure development. Our vision is to help shape this growth through a thoughtfully planned river district that adds a new dimension to Kolkata’s urban future.””

Highlighting the global scale of the project, Arya Sumant, Managing Director, Eden Realty, stated, “Every major global city that has reached its full potential has, at some point, embraced both sides of its river. Kolkata now has the opportunity to do the same. What makes the western shore particularly significant is the scale and character of the canvas-nearly 700 acres bringing together green spaces, premier institutions, railways, ports and direct connectivity to the city. This is not simply an opportunity to develop another destination; it is an opportunity to participate in shaping the next major economic and urban chapter of Kolkata and, potentially, Eastern India.”
