Infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 150 crore each recorded a cumulative cost overrun of around Rs 2,88,122 crore, according to the government’s August 2026 report.

The report monitored 1,731 ongoing projects across 17 central ministries/departments.

Their revised cost stood at Rs 33,60,069 crore against an original cost of Rs 30,71,947 crore. It did not specify the number of projects facing cost overruns.

Cumulative expenditure was Rs 16.33 lakh crore, or 48.59 per cent of revised costs, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said. As many as 647 projects (38 per cent) achieved over 80 per cent physical progress, while 312 (18 per cent) crossed 80 per cent financial completion.

Transport & Logistics accounted for 1,191 projects, with revised costs of Rs 16.05 lakh crore. The sector represented 48 per cent of total revised project costs and 69 per cent of projects.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways had the highest number of projects at 982 (57 per cent), with revised costs of Rs 9.52 lakh crore (28 per cent).

Railways had 147 projects worth Rs 3.14 lakh crore, while Coal had 122 projects worth Rs 2.22 lakh crore.

The energy sector comprised 223 projects with an aggregated revised cost of Rs 10.95 lakh crore (32 per cent). Water & Sanitation had 53 projects worth Rs 2.04 lakh crore (6 per cent), while Communication infrastructure covered 31 projects costing Rs 1.34 lakh crore (4 per cent).

Social & Commercial infrastructure comprised 81 projects with revised costs of Rs 0.97 lakh crore (3 per cent), while ‘Others’ covered 152 projects worth Rs 2.26 lakh crore
