Soon-to-be-inaugurated Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway, 63 kms greenfield project connecting Lucknow and Kanpur, will assume national importance from an industrial and manufacturing perspective as it strengthens connectivity between two nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, according to Knight Frank India.
With Lucknow and Kanpur both forming part of the six-node defence corridor network alongside Jhansi, Aligarh, Agra and Chitrakoot, the expressway is expected to ease the movement of defence materials, industrial goods and workforce mobility, while improving operational efficiency for ancillary industries and manufacturing clusters connected to the corridor.
From a real estate perspective, the immediate impact is likely to emerge in the peripheral and peri-urban stretches between Lucknow and Kanpur rather than the core city markets themselves. The expressway’s connection with the Ganga Expressway near Unnao further enhances its importance. With improved accessibility, areas around Unnao and interchange zones are expected to witness stronger interest for plotted developments, logistics parks, warehousing and mixed-use projects. Over time, this could accelerate the emergence of a more connected urban belt between the two cities.
Rajeev Vijay, Executive Director, Government and Infrastructure Advisory at Knight Frank India said, “The Lucknow–Kanpur (Awadh) Expressway reflects Uttar Pradesh’s continuing broader infrastructure-led growth strategy. The state currently has seven operational expressways, with several additional expressways under development, reinforcing its position as one of India’s fastest-growing infrastructure market. The Awadh Expressway is a strategically important infrastructure project that will significantly enhance local and regional connectivity, industrial efficiency and economic integration across two key nodes of Uttar Pradesh. By reducing travel time between two of the state’s most prominent economic centres to under an hour, the corridor has the potential to reshape commuting patterns, strengthen logistics networks and unlock new opportunities for real estate and industrial development. Its integration with the Ganga Expressway and the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor further elevates its long-term economic significance.”
The expressway begins at Shaheed Path in South Lucknow and terminates at Azad Chauraha near Kanpur, creating a direct high-speed corridor that is expected to redefine mobility and regional development dynamics in Uttar Pradesh. The project will include 38 underpasses, three dedicated rest areas and a 10-bed trauma care hospital facility.
