Maharashtra may soon set up an independent authority, akin to MahaRERA, to exclusively oversee redevelopment projects. The proposed body, aimed at ensuring transparency, accountability, and smoother execution, will guide societies and developers through regulations, agreements, approvals, and dispute resolution, the state housing department said.

Advisory committee members of the state department said the move follows extensive feedback from housing society federations and associations. Committee chairman Rajendra Mirgane said that recommendations have been submitted and they would issue a notification shortly.

The demand for such an authority has been growing steadily, especially as the state witnesses a surge in redevelopment and self-redevelopment initiatives. Migrane said the proposed authority is designed to bring a structured, transparent and accountable framework for redevelopment projects in the state.

“Once formed, the authority will spread awareness about govt rules and policies, lay down procedures and regulations, while establishing clarity on appointment of project management consultants and developers,” he said.

It will help standardise development agreements and related drafts, monitor approvals from multiple authorities, resolve disputes between developers and societies and supervise the process until possession.
