The dream of bringing the Olympics to Ahmedabad is sparking more than sporting excitement — it’s setting off a real estate gold rush. With the city poised to host at least seven international tournaments, industry leaders at a conclave on Saturday projected that mega sporting events could unlock real estate opportunities worth ₹1 lakh crore.
From hotels and housing to malls and metro expansions, Ahmedabad is gearing up for an unprecedented growth surge as the government pitches Gujarat as the future “sports capital of India.
The govt, too, is pitching Gujarat as the future ‘sports capital of India’ with large-scale sports complexes and infrastructure already on the drawing board.
The mood was bullish at the ‘Ahmedabad Real Estate Conclave: Powering Growth with Sports’, organised by Credai Ahmedabad, GCCI and JITO at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex.
Jaxay Shah, chairman of the Quality Council of India (QCI), declared that Ahmedabad is “ready to host at least seven international sports tournaments in the coming years” — with the 2036 Olympics as the ultimate prize. “It will bring Rs 1 lakh crore real estate opportunities,” he said.
Pointing to the Paris 2024 Olympics, Shah highlighted how the Games reshape host cities.
“Paris welcomed over 11 million visitors, its 1.33 lakh hotel rooms hit 86% occupancy, hotel revenues more than doubled, and 3,000 Olympic Village apartments for 14,500 athletes are now permanent homes. Tokyo in 1964 and 2020, Beijing in 2008 — every Games,” he said, “has triggered a wave of transformation”.
