The Union Cabinet has approved highway projects in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh entailing total investment of Rs 14,115 crore.
The construction of a six-lane road tunnel for NH-148AE, connecting Dwarka Expressway with Nelson Mandela Marg, Vasant Kunj in Delhi, has been approved, and the project is expected to be completed in five years, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters here, PTI reported.
The 8.1-kilometre project will be developed with a total capital cost of Rs 6,969.67 crore.
It also approved the 117.7-km, four/six-lane access-controlled Kanpur-Kabrai section of NH-34 in Uttar Pradesh, estimated to cost Rs 7,145.14 crore, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
The approvals come even as a government report highlights the execution challenges facing large infrastructure projects.
According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s latest report for May 2026, infrastructure projects worth over Rs 150 crore each have accumulated cost overruns of around Rs 5.4 lakh crore.
Of the 1,987 ongoing projects monitored across 17 ministries and departments, the total revised cost has risen to Rs 42.50 lakh crore from the original estimate of Rs 37.09 lakh crore. The report also showed cumulative expenditure at Rs 21.82 lakh crore, or 51.34% of the revised project cost, with 817 projects having achieved more than 80% physical progress.
The Cabinet briefing, however, did not include any decision on the ethanol blending programme.
